A letter from an experienced person

Dear Friends,

For your information here I am sharing my experiences on study inabroad and short analysis.

I am Nirmala Jyothi Jujagiri. I did my B.Tech in Industrial &Production Engineering (Mechanical) in RVR, Guntur and MS inMechatronics in the University of Siegen, Siegen, Germany.

First let me compare the masters in all possible countries: US,UK, Germany and Australia.

I can say study in Germany is very interested than in any othercountry. I was in UK in 2003. But I was very disappointed withthe studies in UK. So I left that country and went back to Indiaand apply for German visa and came to Germany in 2004. So almostfor more than 3 years I am living in Germany. I was quitesatisfied with the studies and practical research work here. There is no comparison between the masters in UK and masters inGermany. In UK masters is only one year, that to we have to payhuge amount (about 8 to 10 lakh rupees per one year) as a fee. This much amount is not worthy at all for a masters in UK. UKmaster's degree has no worldwide recognition. Even in India alsopeople give more importance to a German master’s degreethan that of UK. German masters degree has worldwide recognition.

And let us compare now studies in US, Australia and Germany.

a. Study in Germany is not very expensive. In most of theuniversities fee is only Rs. 40000 per semester. It is almostsimilar like masters in Indian private colleges. In Germany we noneed to pay any donations. On the other hand in US and Australiastudy is very expensive. In either of these countries it costsyou at least 10 lakh rupees per annum.

b. In Germany you can work as a research assistant while you aredoing masters. So you can earn your monthly expenses and also youcan gain some experience in your interesting field. All companiesin Germany consider your part time research experience also asyour real experience. So getting job after your masters willbecome easy for you. I don't think that it is possible inAustralia. In Australia you have to work in apple or cherrygardens etc. for your monthly expenses. So you will deviate fromyour main stream. In US some times you can get research orteaching assistantships.

c. And another important point is internships. Among all theabove countries I found internship culture only in Germany. InGermany we can get internships in industries. They will also payyou good amount and you will get real practical experience. Andmost of the times the same company will take you on board aftercompletion of your studies, if they like your work. In othercountries it is not possible as far I know.

d. But on the other side of the coin are visa, work permit, greencard and personal life. In Germany you will get only one yearvisa at the beginning. Every year you have to go for visaextension. After completion of your studies you will get one yearwork permit. In this time you have to search for the job. If notthen you have to leave this country. But I heard that now therules were changed. I heard that according to the new rules wecan get three years work permit after completion of our studies. And also we can get one card called Blue Card, with this card wecan work in any European Union country. But I am not sure aboutthese new rules. Once you get the permanent job after 3 to 4years you will get PR. Getting green card in Germany is also notso easy. On the other hand in Australia getting PR is very easy.Even as a student you will get PR there. And to US in thebeginning itself you will get 5 years visa. Getting green cardbecomes bit difficult now in US, but as compared to Germany it isbit easy I guess. And in UK also you will get work permit afteryour studies.

e. And one more thing we have to compare is language. In Germanymost of the people can't speak English. All official papers arein German. So without knowing German, living here is not socomfortable. So sometimes we feel we are missing something. Butin the rest of the countries we don't have this language problem.

f. Because of the language problem most of the Indians are notsettling down in Germany. Indians are coming here for studies andafter the studies they are leaving to other countries. Thereasons could be
1. Language problem
2. More taxes
3. Bit less salary as compared to US and UK
4. Not much savings
5. Finding an Indian life partner in Germany is not so easy.
6. There is no big Indian community like in US, UK andAustralia.

I am quite satisfied with the studies in Germany. But for thepeople from Computers background, they may find better chances inUS. For technical people like mechanical engineers, automobileengineering, electronics etc. Germany is a nice place to study.

I hope this short information will help you in your quest onstudy in abroad.
